API STD 20D-2019 pdf free download.Qualifcation of Nondestructive Examination Services for Equipment Used in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry.
1 Scope 1.1 Purpose This standard specifes requirements for the application of nondestructive examination (NDE) methods as well as the development and qualifcation procedures used in the manufacturing, servicing, and/or service of equipment for the petroleum and natural gas industries. 1.2 Applicability This is applicable to suppliers providing NDE services for equipment used in the oil and natural gas industries. The requirements of this standard apply to magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, radiography, and ultrasonic methods of NDE. NOTE This standard does not limit the responsibility of any manufacturer of commercial products using NDE services and manufactured to an API standard from its responsibility for compliance with all applicable requirements of that API standard. 2 Normative References The following documents are referred to in the text in such a way that some or all of their content constitutes requirements of this document. Defnitions relating to NDE, which appear in ASTM E1316, apply to the terms used in this standard. 3.1.1 acceptance criteria Defned limits placed on characteristics of materials, processes, products, or services. 3.1.2 calibration Comparison and adjustments to a standard of known accuracy. 3.1.3 check A process performed to maintain confdence in the calibration status of reference, primary, transfer, or working standards and reference materials, performed according to defned procedures and schedules. 3.1.4 complex geometry Castings, forgings, or machined parts with varying thicknesses (i.e. counter-bores, compound angles, cavities) that provide challenges to identify surface or volumetric indications. 3.1.5 liquid penetrant examination An NDE method for detecting surface-breaking faws by bleedout of a colored or fuorescent dye from the faw. 3.1.6 magnetic particle examination An NDE method for detecting discontinuities on or near the surface in suitably magnetized materials, which employs fnely divided magnetic particles that tend to congregate in regions of the magnetic nonuniformity (i.e. along cracks, over inclusions, voids, etc.). 3.1.7 nondestructive examination NDE A method used to check the soundness of a material or a part without impairing or destroying the serviceability of the part. NOTE The term NDE may be known as NDT or NDI in other standards.
3.1.8 procedure qualifcation The process whereby a written NDE procedure is qualifed in accordance with the requirements of this standard. 3.1.9 qualitative quality indicator QQI A fawed shim used to establish proper feld direction and feld strength during technique development in magnetic particle examination. 3.1.10 radiographic quality level An expression of the quality of a radiograph in terms of an image quality indicator (penetrameter). 3.1.11 radiography An NDE method wherein a source of X-rays or gamma rays is used to indicate the subsurface condition of opaque materials. 3.1.12 TAM Panel Penetrant system testing and monitoring panel used as a quick and effcient means for determining the continued serviceability of liquid penetrant inspection systems. Fluorescent, water wash, nonwater wash, hydrophilic, lipophilic, and visible penetrants. 3.1.13 traceability The ability to verify the history, location, or application of an item by means of documented recorded identifcation. 3.1.14 ultrasonic examination An NDE method of testing materials by transmitting high frequency sound waves through them.
